A Strategic Deep Dive into the Circus Troupe
"Yuya Sakaki's Performapals are a colorful troupe of entertainment monsters whose Pendulum effects boost ATK and enable spectacular combos. Skullcrobat Joker searches, Monkeyboard sets scales, and Pendulum Sorcerer destroys to search. Their show is a celebration of creative summoning."
The Performapals are Yuya Sakaki's troupe from Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, and their artworks play like one show: the same performers keep turning up on stage and in each other's acts. Follow a marked name to walk the trail.
The troupe's busiest performer, in the art of a long list of cards, from Dramatic Theater to Show Down. Its Japanese name, "Discover", hides kaba, "hippo", as does that of Flip Hippo.
Close behind: it cheers on in Call, Pinch Helper and Last Minute Cancel, among others.
The cast on stage: Cheermole, Fire Mufflerlion, Helpprincess, Hip Hippo, King Bear, Momoncarpet, Parrotrio, Sleight Hand Magician, Swincobra, Trampolynx and three Hippo Tokens.
A budgie, a conure and a cockatiel. All three count as parrots and parakeets, so the English "parrot trio" and the Japanese "parakeet chorus" both fit. Each bird's bowtie and star are the colour of the next bird along.
Based on Sky Magician, the ace of Yuya's father, Yusho. It borrows the blade frames of Timegazer Magician, the linked gems of Stargazer Magician and the shape of Yuya's pendant.
The cast again, now with Odd-Eyes Light Phoenix, Odd-Eyes Unicorn, Fireflux and Longphone Bull.
A tiger in uniform, saluting; its Japanese name means "soldier tiger", and its effect calls up a troop by adding a Performapal Pendulum Monster from the Deck.
A wolf with Yuya's hairstyle and fangs of gold. Its pose mirrors Silver Claw's.
Gold Fang's mirror image: the same Level, Type and ATK, the opposite Attribute, and claws of silver.
Turn Toad stepping out of what looks like the box trick of Mystic Box. The blades through the box were censored in the TCG print.
Its Japanese name hides gokou, "halo", the arc of light made by ice crystals, and a halo shines behind it, like the arc of a Pendulum Summon in the anime. Its card number in its debut packs was 005.
From ARC-V manga chapter 15, the panel where it is summoned, drawn after the copy on the left of that panel: the one smiling.
A Magician form of Supreme King Z-ARC, its blades like Z-ARC's golden armour. Its effects are those of the four dimension dragons: Starving Venom, Clear Wing, Dark Rebellion and Odd-Eyes.
Yuya's silhouette among the coloured outlines of his troupe, from Bowhopper and Cheermole to Hip Hippo and Monkeyboard: the final shot of "Pendulum Beat!", the last Japanese opening of the ARC-V anime.
The Performapal archetype is one of the most expansive and strategically diverse groups in the game. This vibrant circus troupe isn't defined by a single strategy but serves as a powerful and versatile toolkit for Pendulum-based decks. At its core, the Performapal philosophy revolves around overwhelming resource generation, explosive field presence, and unparalleled access to the Extra Deck. They are the essential "glue" that binds powerful Pendulum themes like Odd-Eyes, Magicians, and Dracoslayers into a cohesive and formidable force.
Mastering the Performapal strategy requires weaving individual cards into cohesive, powerful combos. The following sequences are foundational to the deck's success.
After establishing two Pendulum Scales, Pendulum Summon Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer.
Activate Sorcerer's effect to destroy your two scales and search for Performapal Guitartle and Performapal Skullcrobat Joker.
Normal Summon Joker to search Performapal Lizardraw. Activate Guitartle and Lizardraw to draw two cards. This replenishes your hand and sets up further plays.
The ultimate goal of Performapal combos is to construct a field presenting multiple layers of disruption. These boards are rarely composed of "Performapal" bosses, but rather a curated selection of the game's most powerful generic and synergistic Extra Deck monsters.
Historic Interruptions: 2-4 (with Apollousa providing 2-3 Monster Negates, plus 1 Omni-Negate from Vortex, and a Quick-Effect Link Summon via I:P Masquerena).
Modern Alternative: Replace the forbidden Apollousa with powerful Link monsters like Accesscode Talker for board-breaking or S:P Little Knight for disruption.
Key Enablers: Performapal Skullcrobat Joker, Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer, Odd-Eyes Seer, Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon.
Total Interruptions: 2+ (1 Non-targeting Removal, 1 Spell Negate). This board was historically completed with a multi-negate Apollousa (Forbidden).
Key Enablers: Luster Pendulum, the Dracoslayer, Majesty Pegasus, the Dracoslayer, Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer.
Total Interruptions: 3+ (Field-wide monster effect negation, 1 Omni-Negate via Vortex Dragon, 1 Quick-Effect bounce).
Key Enablers: Performapal Skullcrobat Joker, Performapal Secondonkey, Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon.
LOW IMPACT: The Performapal archetype has been moderately restricted by the TCG banlist, with Astrograph Sorcerer limited.
Meta Implications: Thanks to its Key starters and extenders are hit, making the deck less consistent and more vulnerable to disruption., Performapal remains playable despite the limitation.
